Day 5 - February 28, 2018

Day 5

Well, I'm not terribly good at a daily update, apparently.

Today Greta is starting to touch her foot down.  Yesterday I called the vet to talk about when I should expect to see her do this, since the discharge papers didn't give a timeline for when I should expect her to start to touch.  Also, when she would go out to pee, she'd touch the top of her back foot down, rather than the pad.  I wasn't exactly worried about it, but I did want to be reassured.  The vet told me that she would probably start touching her foot within a week of surgery, but that it can vary.  I was also told not to worry about her putting the top of her foot down.  The vet explained that since Greta no longer has a real joint that until the muscle heals and the scar tissue forms, her leg is kind of just hanging in place.  Today, however she is just beginning to set her foot down.  Yay!

Greta wants to play.  Greta can't play.  The other dogs aren't helping this at all.

The discharge papers say to ice the incision three times a day for the first 36 hours and then twice a day for the next five days.  Well, I've quit icing her leg.  Firstly, there is no swelling and she's not bothered by it.  Secondly, and most importantly, she will no longer let me ice her leg.  She just gets up and leaves.  I can't exactly wrestle her to the ground to ice her down, so she wins.

She's starting to eat her dry kibble, but only after starting with the wet mixed in with the dry.  I'm not feeding her the mix in the morning any longer, only before her antibiotics.  We have two more days of those.  After that, she's back to only dry kibble - poor Greta...
