Day 11 - March 6, 2018
Day 11
Since day 8 we've been having a slow recovery. I don't remember if I posted or not, but Saturday evening (day 8) Greta lost her footing in the kitchen. I didn't see it, but I heard it. I quickly turned and saw her scrabbling to get her feet back under her. Since then she's been very hobbly, not wanting to put her foot down, and she's very leery of the kitchen floor. Today I've noticed her putting her right back foot down again, and throughout the day she's been putting it down more often and she looks to be bearing more weight. Now just to keep her from doing anything to else to it.
Greta definitely wants to play. It's best if I take her out without any of the other dogs. Henry, my 9 year old dog, really wants to play with Greta. (If fact, Greta is Henry's puppy. His playful streak is the reason I wanted to adopt a younger dog.) Greta wants to play too; it's hard to keep her from pulling me around the backyard, even when she's using only three legs.
We finished the antibiotics a few days ago. Once those were done I quit mixing wet food in with the dry. It took about 36 hours but she's eating her kibble again.
I'm still giving her the inflammatories and the pain pills, but I've cut back on the pain pills. I'm trying to strike the balance between keeping her drugged and keeping her out of pain. Today I have given her her morning Tramadol, but we skipped the mid-day pill. I think I'll give her one tonight before bed to help her be comfortable. She can get up and move around alot at night.
She's still trying to lick her incision. I think it's itchy more than painful. The best solution I've found for this is an old t-shirt of mine, with the sleeves cut off. I put it over her head and then put her front feet through the armholes. I've pinned the lower edge of the t-shirt around her back leg, making a sort of romper. I used a strip of knit fabric to create a belt to pull the shirt up around her waist - so it doesn't drag on the floor. I've pinned back some of the other floppy bits and it with a pad sewn in over her incision, it seems to be doing the trick! I put the padding in so that if she does lick she won't make it through to her stitches before I catch her. It seems that with that extra padding she is less inclined to lick at it.
We go back to the vet on Day 18. It "should" be on day 14, but the vet is out then through Day 18. We could go in earlier, but as long as Greta makes improvements, we're going to wait.
